IFK Goteborg Sports Director on Scouting Mission in Abuja

The of Sweden’s IFK Goteborg, Stig Torbjornsen, has embarked on a scouting trip to Abuja with the ambition of discovering a new talent akin to Alhassan Yusuf. Yusuf, a Super Eagles midfielder, launched his career at IFK Goteborg after being scouted at the Gothia Cup in Sweden. Since then, he has gone on to play in the UEFA Champions League with Antwerp and is currently with the MLS’s New England Revolution in the United States.

Goteborg narrowly avoided relegation from the Swedish league on the final day of play, repeating a similar escape from the previous season. Torbjornsen has expressed his openness to all positions, excluding goalkeepers, as he surveys an academy tournament in Nigeria. He notes the unpredictable nature of scouting, saying, It could be ten players who are interesting; it could be zero. The primary focus is on young talents with potential, whether they are strikers, centre backs, or defensive midfielders.

As Torbjornsen’s contract with IFK Goteborg expires at the end of the year, his future with the club remains uncertain. Goteborg initially acquired him from IFK Norrköping in early 2022.
